PREPOSITIONS
A
preposition is a word that shows the relationship between pronoun/noun and
other words. A preposition is followed by pronoun, noun or noun phrase as its
object. Prepositions can be simple like on, at, in, above, between, for, etc.
or complex like in accordance with, according to, exclusive of, away from, with
reference to, etc.
CLASSIFICATION
OF PREPOSITIONS
1.
Prepositions showing place
They include; behind, at, to, among, near, next to, adjacent to, across,
etc. For example,
Ø I saw him behind the classroom
Ø She went to the market
Ø She stands near me
Ø He walked across the road
2.
Prepositions denoting time
They include; at, before, after, till, for, since, in, on, etc. For
example,
Ø I have been waiting you for
three hours
Ø She has lived here since 2022
Ø We must arrive at twelve O’clock
Ø You should complete this work before
Monday
Ø We exchanged ideas till five O’clock
Ø The project will be completed in
December
Ø They will report on Tuesday
3. Prepositions showing manner/means/method/instrument
They include; by, with, on,
Ø She walks with a stick
(instrument)
Ø We go to school on foot (means)
Ø They went to Egypt on horse
(means)
Ø Janeth travelled by bus (means)
Ø I earn money by teaching (method)
Ø She treats elders with care
(manner)
4. Prepositions showing reason or purpose
They include; for, of, with, etc. For example;
Ø He died of malaria
Ø Education is provided for mental
development
Ø They struggle for human rights
Ø She replied with anger
5. Prepositions showing possession
They include; of, with. For example,
Ø Wema is the wife of Jose
Ø Dodoma is the capital city of
Tanzania
Ø A boy with white shirt speaks
well
Ø A woman with big eyes comes from
Mombasa
6. Prepositions showing direction/movement
They include; into, through, towards, up, out of, from, round, etc. For
example,
Ø He entered into the class
Ø The cat ran out of the house
Ø I threw the pen through the
window
Ø They went up the peak of Mount
Kilimanjaro
Ø The earth moves round the sun
